Promoting Behavioral Health Services with animation
See how we took on the challenge of transforming a sensitive community message and making it feel personal. We developed a custom animated story that simplified the mission without losing its heart.
Ethics in Storytelling: Animating Recovery for Blue Ridge Health
Telling stories about sensitive topics like substance abuse and rehabilitation requires more than just a camera; it requires a commitment to the dignity of the people involved.
The Challenge
Blue Ridge Health came to us to promote two vital programs: Intensive Outpatient and Psychosocial Rehabilitation. These programs change lives, but because of their sensitive nature, traditional video testimonials weren't the right fit. We needed a way to center the client experience without compromising their privacy.
Our Approach
We decided that custom animation was the most ethical and engaging way to tell these stories. By moving away from traditional filming, we were able to protect the anonymity of participants while still creating a deep, emotional connection with the viewer.
The Process
Script & Strategy: Our team crafted unique scripts for each program to ensure we hit the right tone and "hook."
A-Roll & Voiceover: We filmed program staff on location, using our scripts to guide candid conversations that balanced technical information with real conviction.
Handcrafted Motion: Our in-house animator designed every character and background from scratch. We used no AI in this creative process. Everything was blocked out, scene-by-scene, to maintain a through-line of visual consistency and human touch.
The Result
By marrying animated sequences with live-action "A-Roll" and custom sound design, we delivered a finished product that is as sensitive as it is effective. These videos are now used to uplift and inform communities across Western North Carolina.
